Nokia to unleash new E7 and N8 smartphones next week

Ready to make a fresh assault on the smartphone market. Image: Nokia.

In the world of smartphones, much of the market focus has been squarely centred on the likes of Apple’s iPhone, RIM’s BlackBerry line and the increasing amount of Android-powered devices such as the Motorola Droid. But what of Nokia, which is, after all, the world’s leading mobile phone maker?

It would appear Espoo-based Nokia Corp. is preparing a fresh assault against the smartphone sector, which will begin next week when it rolls out a selection of brand new handset devices during its annual media and industry event.

Citing sources “with direct knowledge of Nokia’s plans,” Reuters reports that Nokia’s show in London will see the covers whipped off the mysterious E7, a new flagship smartphone equipped with a large touch-screen display and a full QWERTY keyboard.

Along with a selection of other smartphone devices, Nokia is also expected to introduce the N8 handset, which will carry an impressive class-leading 12 mega-pixel camera and will be the first Nokia device to be powered by the new Symbian 3 operating platform.

Other features likely to be crammed into the N8 include a 3.5-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, HD recording functionality, 16GBs of onboard data storage, a HDMI connection, and Dolby Digital Plus.

According to Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti, the Nokia N8 is expected to hit retail as early as September 30. Other reports suggest the device will arrive in the United Kingdom and across Europe a week earlier on September 23.

The unlocked version of Nokia’s N8 is set to cost around 420 GBP when it arrives in the UK, and between 459 and 499 Euros when it spreads throughout the rest of Europe.

Nokia N9 Spotted in the Wild - Nokia N9 Real Pictures Emerge

While Nokia’s N8 is the first Symbian^3 smartphone heading to consumers this summer, it’s also the last Symbian^3 smartphone to be featured in Nokia’s N line.

Nokia N9 MeeGo

The following N products, starting with the Nokia N9 will be apparently MeeGo only devices and we can only hope to see a successful N line of MeeGo smartphones emerge soon.

We have seen the Nokia N9 just recently in a Nokia official presentation but in the mean time we have some pictures of the device in the wild for you. The N9 is very similar to the N8 but it comes with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, N97-style.

nokia n9 1

But you know what the problem with this specific unit is? The N9 in the picture comes with Symbian on board and there’s no doubt about it. We’ve seen those homescreens before and it’s pretty obvious we’re not looking at MeeGo here.

Is it all a mistake? Is this N9 a test unit left somewhere in a bar? Maybe it’s not even the N9 in the first place as we could be looking at a device that’s supposed to be the Symbian version of the N9. The handset is said to have a “Co” label at the upper left corner, so does it mean we’re looking at a C-series Symbian device?

We’ll just have to wait for that official Nokia press release which will tell you everything there is to know about this baby. So far we know this N9 in the picture comes with an 8-megapixel shooter, 850 / 1900 3G bands and a “ridiculous screen clarity.” Those bands there clearly suggest that the phone is set to be launched in North America, where AT&T, Telus, Bell and Rogers could offer it to U.S. and Canadian customers.

Would you buy the MeeGo Nokia N9 version instead of an iPhone or Android handset?

Here are the first real pictures of the Nokia N8-01. According to the source, the Nokia N8-01 will run on Symbian^3 OS, have 8MP camera with dual LEDs flash and Qwerty keyboard. The rest of the specs are still unknown.

New Bike Add-On Allows For Phone Charging - Go Green

The green movement has stopped being just about saving our dying planet and has become the fashionable thing to do. I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing, as on one hand it gets a group who wouldn’t normally care to be pulled into the movement involved, but on the other we lose the reason and passion of what began the movement in the process. This new phone charger from Nokia looks as if it will walk the line between the two, balancing green power and posh-ness.

Nokia has come up with a way to charge your phone using the static electricity created by your rotating tire on your bike, therefore charging your phone while riding around town. The bike charger kit will include a DC-14 phone charger, a phone holder that you can attach to your bicycle, a dynamo (used to power the batteries), and a bunch of other accessories to install the device on your bike. The charger will be compatible with any phone with a standard 2mm charging jack.

After it is installed, the kit will charge your phone when you ride the bike at speeds in excess of 6 km/h. Nokia has suggested that the speed of the bike should be over 12 km/h for best efficiency.
Now, Nokia has said it will be focusing on developing countries where electricity may be sparse; a pretty noble move in my eyes; it could do some good in countries like India or China where the bike is a common means of transport. The best part is that it will be completely affordable with an $18 price tag.
If this bike charger ends up being successful, Nokia has stated that they will be bringing it to European markets later this year; most likely North America will follow. And after that… I prophesize that the tabloids will be showing our “green-conscious” celebrities riding their bikes cell-phones in tow.
